FISH FACTS

Description
Head and upper body blue-grey to silver; numerous narrow wavy dark vertical bars along sides; caudal fin dusky yellowish in life; first dorsal fin with 15-18 spines; lateral line with an abrupt dip behind level of second dorsal-fin origin.

Matures in about 2 years by 89 cm total length. Spawns serially, mostly from October to November. Maximum age is about 17 years. Feeds on small fish and squid.

Habitat
Pelagic around coastal to offshore reefs.

Food
Carnivore

Range
Northern part of Australia, from Cape Naturaliste, WA to Cape Otway, Vic; temperate to tropical Indo-west Pacific.
