Swimming with giant Whale sharks is a once in a life time experience you can enjoy off Western Australia. Ningaloo Whaleshark n Dive (formerly Village Dive) operates various dive and snorkel tours on the Ningaloo Reef, including Whale Shark tours. Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean growing to 18 m in length. They have a broad flat head that grows to 1m wide. To feed they open their large mouth and filter plankton out of the water through their gills. Whale sharks, despite their awesome size, are harmless to humans.
To see Whale sharks up close you can take a snorkeling day trip on the Ningaloo Reef with Ningaloo Whaleshark-n-Dive. Tours include all transfers from your accommodation in Exmouth The tour begins with a courtesy bus transfer from your accommodation in Exmouth to the Ningaloo Whaleshark n Dive vessel ‘Aliikai’ on the western side of North Western Cape.
There are no age restrictions and they cater for all swimming levels. Good quality snorkeling equipment and wetsuit hire is provided. Basically all you need to bring is your swimmers, towel and sunscreen – everything else, including lunch, is provided. A disposable or reusable underwater camera would be handy if you want to take photos. Once on board, the crew will introduce themselves and give you a safety briefing and a run down of the agenda for the day.
The journey to the Ningaloo Reef marine park takes about an hour, and on the way you might dolphins, turtles, and perhaps even humpback whales depending on time of year. Ningaloo Whaleshark n Dive shares a spotter plane with other Whale shark tour operators. The crew will give you a Whale shark interaction briefing so you know what to expect. They will also ensure you are correctly fitted out with your snorkel equipment. Once a Whale shark is located your group will get to snorkel with these magnificent giants. The time you spend with the Whale sharks depends on how many of them are around, and how long it takes to get to them. If you are a beginner, then you will get special supervision. The crew has a zodiac inflatable in the water at all times for your safety. There is a qualified Marine Biologist on board on every Whale shark tour, and a professional Videographer will video the trip, giving you the option to buy a DVD at the end of the day.
During the tour morning tea and buffet style lunch is provided. During lunch you can socialize with other guests and crew, or find a quiet spot to take it easy. After lunch and whale shark watching is over for the day, you will have time to snorkel in the reef lagoon or relax on the boat.
