Bonorong Wildlife Conservation Centre, near Brighton, Tasmania
Bonorong Wildlife Conservation Centre is a wildlife park located about 40 minutes drive north of Hobart. Bonorong specializes in education, conservation and care of native Tasmanian animals. The Centre was established in 1981 as a sanctuary for injured Tasmanian wildlife.
The park is home to Australian animals, such as Kangaroos, Wallabies, Wombats, Tasmanian Devils, Spotted Quolls, Sugar Gliders, Echidna and various birds. Wildlife Tours are conducted each day at 11:30 am and 2pm by experience keepers who provide wildlife interpretation with a strong conservation message. The tours include a wombat encounter, devil feeding and close up with koalas. Koalas are not naturally occurring in Tasmania, but you can these well-loved marsupials in gum trees at the Centre. The rangers provide you with special food to hand feed the Forester kangaroos (the Tasmanian subspecies of the Eastern Grey Kangaroo).
Tasmanian Devil conservation is an important conservation focus, and the Centre is active in public education about the Tasmanian Devil and the impact of Devil facial tumour disease (DFTD), an aggressive cancer that kills Tasmanian Devils. There are more than a dozen Tasmanian devils at Bonorong and the keeper tours include devil ecology, life history and latest research.
Bonorong Wildlife Conservation Centre also runs a rehabilitation service for orphaned and injured wildlife, using a network of volunteers and half-way properties to care for the animals.
Facilities at the Centre include a gift shop and café. The Bush Gift Shop has a range of quality souvenirs, toys, cards, books and jeweler. Refreshments and light snacks are also available. You can enjoy a light lunch or Damper with jam and cream on the verandah of the Bush Shed Café.
Bonorong Wildlife Conservation Centre is located at 593 Briggs Road in Brighton, about 30km north of Hobart along the Heritage Highway. The Centre is open from 8:30am to 5pm every day (except Christmas Day).
