EURASIAN COOT FACTS

Description
The Eurasian Coot is dark grey with a white bill. It has a bright red eye. Young birds are paler than adults. Similar in size and shape to the Dusky Moorhen.

Size
36cm

Habitat
swamps, lakes, lagoons where there is vegetation for cover and nesting

Food
mainly plants. Also some insects and small fish

Breeding
the nest is a floating mass of vegetation built on logs or stumps surrounded by water. Lays up to 15 eggs.

Range
found across much of Australia except arid interior. Also found in Indonesia.
