REPTILE FACTS

Description
The White-throated snapping turtle is a large freshwater turtle endemic to Queensland. The carapace is dark brown to almost black. The head is dark brown or greyish brown above and, females usually have cream or white throat.

Southern snapping turtle

Size
carapace grows to about 45 cm in length

Habitat
rivers with clear water. Nests on sandy or loamy soil on riverbanks

Food
mainly herbivorous, feeding on leaves, roots, stems, fruit and buds of riverside plants that fall into the water

Breeding
The female lays a clutch of about 14 eggs in a nest on the riverbank

Range
south eastern Queensland, in the Burnett, Mary and Fitzroy River systems
